Engendering Energy Policy to Improve Energy Access in Sub-Saharan Africa

Expertise in energy transitions, gendered energy innovations, system dynamics, and sustainable development. Josephine Kaviti Musango is the Founder and Director of ASET. She has over 15 years of professional and research experience in the energy sector in Africa, working with diverse stakeholders. These stakeholders include policymakers, governments, researchers, community members and funders. Her work helps support policy and strategy in managing change in energy transitions so that it is inclusive and transformative using gendered and system dynamics approaches. Josephine serves on the Energy Sector Gender Ministerial Advisory Council in South Africa. She also has over 18 years of experience in system dynamics modelling and training. Josephine holds a PhD in Public Management and Development from Stellenbosch University in South Africa (2010-2012), where she focused on technology assessment of renewable energy sustainability. She also holds a Masters in Agricultural Economics from Stellenbosch University in South Africa (2004 -2005) and a bachelor's degree in Agribusiness Management from Egerton University in Kenya (1998 -2002).

Adélia Filosa Francisco Chicombo is an ASET research associate. She has over 15 years of professional experience in research, public management, procurement, fundraising and lecturing. Throughout her master's and PhD studies, she researched energy access, energy transition, energy efficiency and energy/gender/poverty nexus. This allowed a better understanding of the Mozambican and Southern African energy mixes and suggested policies and strategies to enable energy transition within these environments. Adélia has also worked for more than 14 years as a project analysis and financial management lecturer at the Faculty of Economics of Eduardo Mondlane University. Adélia holds a PhD in Public Management and Development from Stellenbosch University in South Africa (2019-2022), where she focused on energy transition from a gendered lens in developing countries. She also holds a Masters in Energy Studies and Development from the University of Cape Town in South Africa (2013 -2015) and a bachelor's degree in management from Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique (2004 -2008).
